This December 2024, we want to give our gratitude.
In 2017, when we received the Hewlett Foundation 50 Commissions grant for an Angel Island Oratorio by composer Huang Ruo, we knew life as a quartet would change. Looking back, we had no idea what we were in for!
When the pandemic hit in the midst of working on ANGEL ISLAND, we knew we needed to dig even deeper. We wanted to make sure we were as vital to the community as we hoped we were. We braved wind, sun, fog, hills and even rain to bring music to our streets. We supported the ecosystem with new commissions and small grants to new music colleagues. We helped keep music alive for our composers, our neighbors, our students, and more. It wasn't always easy, but what we got in return was so much. And through it all, you all have become such an important part of everything we do.
Some years later, we're a string quartet doing things a little differently. We make magic on the canyon walls of the Yampa River. We record stories in our basement for our podcast that has been part of Tribeca Festival (and recently won a Signal Award!) We brave early-morning ferries to perform inside the Angel Island detention barracks for our new series. We help entertain thousands of people for Cambodian Day at Union Square.
And we're staying committed to growing new works from the roots that we have been carefully tending. There's so many continuing or new community-based projects. Songs of the Diaspora grew from our friendship with poet Genny Lim, and will be an amazing evening celebrating female voices with composers Vivian Fung, Theresa Wong, and Meilina Tsui.
And there's so much more...
But what's important is that stories are shared and music is made. We ALL contribute to the vibrancy of arts - whether its picking up an instrument, jotting down some chords, volunteering to bring the quartet lunch on Angel Island, or funding a new project. Music makes us better people, better listeners, and better neighbors.
So THANK YOU, this season, for making our work in the arts a continued possibility.
With love,
The Quartet
We are grateful to your generous support and to all that have already given in 2024!
If you would like to support our programs, please make a generous, tax-deductible gift by December 31 to our non-profit Del Sol Performing Arts Organization by sending a check or donating on line. Also, please consider setting up a recurring donation, in an amount and on a schedule of your choosing. In addition, a matching gift from your employer, if available, will increase the impact of your gift.
As 2024 comes to an end, we continue to reflect on all that we are thankful for, which includes your involvement in our community. Because of you, we are able to devote our time creating art that impacts our community today while creating a future for music tomorrow.
